Description
YOUTH LEADERSHIP AND PEACE BUILDING COURSE FOR YOUTH LEADERS
This Programme aims to
provide an opportunity for young people of the world to share their ideas
and experiences of improving their communities and making a better world.
It is a forum for youths to gain new skills, explore issues, work on
practical projects, ICT for new life, build new friendship, collaboration
and have fun. Another side of the course will involve looking at issues
in-depth and sharing information, insights, good practices in conflict
resolution, peace- building and a range of development related issues. The
main aim of this course is to train youth leaders in the fields of peace,
development, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and
sustainable development in order to meet the challenges facing youth
NGOs/organizations in the 21st century, in either the developed or
developing countries.
Methodology
The course will
be a mixture of lectures, working groups, exercises, and
readings/discussions. It will be divided into four main sections related
to peace building & governance, ICT for Development, civil society and
capacity building and organizational development. Principal concepts,
major approaches and activities, and role of governance and civil society
will be highlighted. Lectures and discussions will take place in the
morning sessions, while parallel workshops will be organized in the
afternoon. Lectures will primarily use the case study approach and
especially focus on recent peace-building activities of national and
international governmental and non-governmental stakeholders worldwide.
The overall purpose of the afternoon workshops is to provide practical
training in the skills essential to effective and sustainable conflict
resolution/organizational development and mutually beneficial
relationships. These workshops are also expected to integrate what has
been learned in the morning sessions. The workshops will be split into
five groups, each focusing on specific problem areas: constitutionalism
and legislation, political parties and electoral processes, civil society
and organizational development, social policy and gender issues, and peace
and security policy as well as ICT policy. The goal of this exercise is to
engage in deep analysis of the problems under each topic and make
recommendations that are likely to address not only the specific problems,
but also to contribute of long-term peace-building in conflict areas. Each
group will identify critical problems, describe and analyze their root
causes, identify countries with the greatest manifestations of these
problems, outline approaches and measures to cause change, specify the
necessary conditions of effectiveness by actors (national, regional and
international governmental and non-governmental). Public presentation of
the integrated report at the end of the course is anticipated. It is
anticipated that some evenings will be taken up by participants'
presentations on concrete conflict cases.
